Q. What are deposit waivers in Texas?
A. Deposit waivers in Texas allow certain individuals to avoid paying a deposit when setting up electricity service with a retail energy provider like Think Energy. Deposits are typically required to start service if a customer has questions surrounding their credit history. However, waivers are offered to make electricity service more accessible for eligible individuals.

Q. Which customers are eligible for waivers?
A. Customers can be eligible for waivers if they meet one of these criteria:

  • Over 65: Customers must provide a valid ID and their most recent electricity invoice, or a letter of credit from their current provider showing 12 months of on-time payments. Only one late payment is allowed during this period.
  • Letter of Credit: New customers must submit a document from their current provider showing 12 months of on-time payments. Only one late payment is allowed during this period.
  • Victim of Family Violence: Customers provide a completed form obtained from their caseworker.

*Note* Providing the customer does not have a missed or late payment over the course of 12 billing cycles, the deposit will be returned to the customer on the thirteenth billing cycle.
